Medical Alert Bracelets

Once we found out about our grandson having Type 1 Diabetes we asked about the necessity of a Medical Alert Bracelet or Necklace. We also wondered if a Medical Alert Bracelet was available to hold up against kids’ rough activities to ensure they continue to wear it. So I did some searching and thought I would share with you what I learned.

Why Wear A Medical Alert Bracelet

After our daughter informed us Alex would need a Medical Alert Bracelet we wondered why. I mean he is only five and almost always with a parent or grand-parent so does he really need to wear one. We can be his voice, can’t we?Medical Alert Bracelets

The truth is we are not always with him. He does go to school and what about if he was ever involved in a car accident. The adults in his life may not be able to tell first responders that he is a Type 1 Diabetic.

As he grows and begins to spend more of his time away from the protection of his parents it becomes even more critical that he wears a Medical Alert Bracelet.

Who Should Wear A Medic Alert

The truth is, none of us knows if/when we will require emergency medical care. It is for this reason that it is so important we wear a Medical Alert Bracelet or Necklace, to be our voice when we are unable.

Anyone who has been diagnosed with a chronic condition takes medications regularly or has food or drug allergies need to wear a Medical Alert Bracelet. In an emergency, the information the first responders gain from your medical alert bracelet could be life-saving.

If you or a loved one has any of the following conditions, a medical alert bracelet or necklace should be worn:

  • Food, Drug, or Insect Allergies
  • Cardiac Problems (angina, arrhythmia’s, atrial fibrillation, pacemakers)
  • Pulmonary Conditions (asthma, COPD)
  • Kidney Failure
  • Diabetes or blood disorder
  • Alzheimer’s/Memory Impairment

Basically, if your medical diagnosis could require any variation from standard medical treatment by first responders then you should wear a Medical Alert Bracelet or Necklace. This is so critical in those first moments when you may not be able to speak for yourself.

Wearing a Medical Alert Bracelet could actually save your life or the life of a loved one.

What Type Should I Wear

Medical Alert Jewellery is available in different types and styles. First Responders are trained to look for Medical Alert Bracelets or Necklaces as well as Wallet Cards. Whichever type you have, it is important to always wear it.

Medical Alert Bracelets

Bracelets are quite common and First Responders are trained to look for them. This is important as it will give them key information on how to best treat you medically.

Without this knowledge, they could unknowingly administer the wrong treatment which could have devastating effects.

There are many styles of Medical Alert Bracelets and the one you choose is a personal decision. Some are more durable for people actively involved in sports, some are designed to look nice like any other bracelet you might wear.

Choose one that will last and you won’t mind wearing every day. They even have cool colored silicone ones for kids. Perfect if they are into sports.

Necklaces are also a popular choice. Again First Responders are trained to look for these, ensuring your vital medical information is available when it is needed most.

There is a large selection of different styles of Medical Alert Necklaces and again that is a personal choice on which one is right for you. They can easily be tucked inside a shirt if you don’t want it constantly visible.

Choose something you like and will wear every day.

Tattoos are becoming popular but are not as good of a choice. First Responders are not trained to look for a tattoo and they could easily be overlooked as any other tattoo. Personally, I would not trust my life with a tattoo version.

What To Engrave On A Medical Alert Bracelet

Once we identified that our grandson did in fact require a Medical Alert Bracelet then we needed to know what type of information should be engraved on it.

The following should be included on a Medical ID:

  • Name
  • Medical Condition
  • Allergies to Food, Medication, Metals and Insects, Etc
  • Engrave your medications
  • Emergency Contact information

Where Do I Buy A Medical Alert

In Canada, you can pick up an order form at the local Drugstore, although that selection is very limited. I am not certain if this is the case in other countries. I was able to find a much larger selection online, you can check it out here.  As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. There is a large selection of styles and prices.

Whatever you buy, be sure the person requiring it wears it everywhere they go.

Conclusion

While unpleasant to think about there is any number of reasons why a person may not be able to speak up about their medical conditions. It is for this reason that Medical Alert Bracelets and Necklaces were created.

They DO save lives.

Purchasing a Medical Alert Bracelet or Necklace is similar to buying insurance. You hope you will never require it but if the need should arise, you will be so thankful for the for-thought. They are inexpensive and the benefits clearly make it an essential item to purchase as soon after diagnosis as possible.

Whether it’s for you or a loved one invest today to ensure accurate life-saving medical care can be administered should it ever be required.

The life this saves could be your own.
